Kindness Card Drops

So have you been to visit Kind Over Matter yet (it's on my One Pretty Blog Award list)? They've made two series of wonderful little quote cards as shown here, and you can download and printum up for (dundundun...) free! Moo Mama also created some supercute quote cards, and those are free for the printing, too :) These are delightful little things to drop in random places for others to find (sort of like those "Are you going to Hell?" booklets, only, um... friendlier.)

I Love Mars

Besides Earth, what's your favorite planet?
*Mars looks red because of all the iron-rich, rusty-colored minerals in the soil.
*Probes have discovered lots of ice beneath the surface of the South Pole.
*Mars has incredible canyons, larger and deeper than our Grand Canyon.
*Mars is very cold (the average temperature is -80 degrees F!)

4th of July Tips for Pup Patriots

Dogs have very well-developed senses that we, as humans, don't utilize as much. On a daily basis, they smell and hear things we don't even notice. So it's easy to understand why the 4th of July can be an overwhelming holiday for a dog. For pups celebrating the holiday for the first time, it can be especially scary! Fireworks are a brand new, suspicious, extremely loud & stinky experience. Here are some things to try that might help make your dog's celebration a less stressful event:

*Keep your dog at home, inside, in a familiar, sheltered, quiet, comfy area (if your dog is happily crate trained, have his or her crate available for their retreat. Regardless, you'll want to keep up your area designators, like baby gates, etc.) Remember that (for their own safety) puppies should never have free reign of the home under any circumstances, but especially during stressful events. Keep things cozy.

*Keep drapes and blinds closed to help limit visual stimulus.

*Ideally, staying at home with your puppy during their first 4th is the best scenario, because you can set the tone for their introduction to the fireworks experience. Your vibe should be "I hear & smell it, too... no big deal..." In some neighborhoods, excited kids will break out mini-fireworks-previews prior to the 4th. These faraway sounds can actually be a helpful introduction. When your dog first hears the fireworks, he or she will look to you (the pack leader) for a reaction. If he or she observes fear, concern, or annoyance coming from you, your dog will naturally assume there is something to fear, be concerned about, or annoyed with. The best way to react is to stay calm, casually acknowledge that you heard the sound, too ("yep, fireworks...") and go about your business. Move on, end of focus...

*Resist the urge to "mommycomfort" (...by picking your puppy up for cuddles, kisses & endless cooing "it's OK"s, you'll only draw focus to the fireworks, and feed the idea that there must be something to be suspicious of.) Behaving like a calm, confident leader is the best way to give your dog any needed reassurance: just keep that "I hear it, too... no biggie" vibe. Then move on...

*If you will be entertaining, make sure your dog still has her own calm, quiet area to either stay in, or to retreat to (such as her crate, pen, or bed, located in a room where she will not be bothered.) Even very social dogs can become overstimulated and tired, and will likely need some time to snooze or relax with a chew toy. Depending on your dog's temperament, this might also be a good time for your dog to practice learning that guests=good things: social dogs should work for treats (give guests treats, and ask them to put your dog in a sit-stay, etc. before treating.) If your dog will be mingling, it's important to keep your dog with you throughout your event (this will help to avoid any potential escapes while guests are entering and exiting your home. If you feel this is not possible, keep your dog secured in her quiet area, instead.) With respect to guests, remember that some children can be scarier than fireworks! If you'll have kids around, before you introduce your dog...gather up the kids and discuss their ideas on how they think they should behave around your dog. Try to make it fun with lots of open-ended questions, and by helping to put the child in the dog's position: "How would you feel if strangers you never met before in your life (!) suddenly came up to you and started touching your face or patting you on the head?..." Afterwards, when you do bring your dog out, praise positive kid behavior ("Good job letting Fido sniff your hand...I like how you're using gentle fingers..." etc. ) Never leave your dog unsupervised with children (I recommend this for your dog's own safety, not just for the safety of the child...)

* If you'll be going out and leaving your dog alone, consider hiring a puppy sitter. Prep the sitter by explaining how you'd like them to react to the fireworks. Leave your puppy with a cozy sweatshirt or pillowcase that smells like you, and give your sitter treats to practice commands (and redirect any unwanted behavior.) Be sure your sitter clearly understands your puppy rules (regarding things such as scraps, feeding from the table, etc.) and the reasons behind them ("she has serious allergies," "doctor's orders," "it took us 2 years to train her not to..." etc.)

*As always, make sure your dog's area has been puppy-proofed (remove potentially dangerous cords, plants, etc., and be sure to pick up your people-clutter such as random shoes, socks, wrappers, pens and things.) When stressed or frightened, some dogs can suddenly become destructive, so you'll want to be especially sure your dog's area is safe and orderly.

*Give your dog a busy brain toy, and/or a favorite chew toy to focus on.

*Turn on the TV or radio at normal volume. These "normal" background sounds can be comforting. If you leave the TV on, check your program guide so you can be sure to tune into happy, non-scary programing (this means no reruns of COPS, or special holiday presentations of Saving Private Ryan...) As far as music goes, classical music is often a great option (and around this time of year there are usually lots of wedding ceremony classical music mixes available.)

*If you already know that your dog gets freaked out by loud noises like thunder, talk with your vet ahead of time for ways to help alleviate the fear and anxiety fireworks may likely cause. In severe cases, your vet may prescribe your dog an anti-anxiety drug, or recommend an over-the-counter, herbal-based, pet store-available alternative (supplements like Quiet Moments, Comfort Calm Doggie Bites, etc.) Another option is a product called Comfort Zone. It's a device you plug into an outlet, and it releases calming pheromones (they make a formula for cats, as well.)

*Do not leave your dog outside alone. Shelters overflow with dogs after the holiday weekend, due to lost "yard dogs" who get scared, escape, and run off in fear. Frightened chained dogs can become entangled in their chains. This can lead to really serious injury and even death.

*Make sure your pets are wearing id tags so if they do bolt, they can be returned easily. I always recommend that pets have id tags and get microchiped (in case the collar slips off while lost.)

~Hope you have a happy, stress-free 4th~

No Autographs, Please...

Jinjerup (who has those purty free downloadables that I'm always gushing over & linking to) recently awarded me with the One Lovely Blog Award. Getting the One Lovely Blog Award is (fittingly) a lovely thought, so big thank yous to Jinjerup :)

There's some fine print to this award, however. If you get it, you're supposed to pass it along by giving it out to 15 other blogs. Maybe I'm just the world's laziest blogger, but when I read that part I was like "Whatthewhat?"... 'cause that sounds like... um...homework (to which I say "BOOOOOO!")

Despite the homeworkiness of it all, these blogs are really worth listing (and worth visiting, too, which I really hope you do!) I considered trying to categorize them by topic but, much like my own blog, most of these blogs kinda fuse topics (like pets, nature, kidlets, art, music, and girly-girl things.) Skip around the links and have fun discovering who's who :)

My 15 Award-Winner Winners:
The Magic Onions

Filth Wizardy

Lucky Fiona

Journey into Unschooling

That Artist Woman

Chubbas N Boop

Deep Space Sparkle

Garden Mama

Weirdbuglady

Ordinary Life Magic

Kind Over Matter

Pretty Little Things

A Fanciful Twist

Faerie*Dust*Dreams

Have You Met Heather

FYIs:
I could not email some of the award winners because they didn't have an email address listed, so..., uh... hmm... I guess that's just that :)

If your blog is listed, and you already have the award, then I have no idea what the protocol is. I'm guessing just... smile!

If you get the award and you don't have time to/want to list 15 blogs... maybe I'm being a troublemaker, but I say maybe just... DON'T! I think (hope!) this was started as a fun thing, so if people are forced to feel guilty about the homeworky aspect, then that's just... not fun, right? ... And certainly not very... lovely :)

Hope you all enjoy these truly wonderful blogs (I know I do!)

Happy Father's Day!

Since today is all about dads, I thought I'd share two of my favorite, recently-discovered dadcentric-themed movie picks:

Dan in Real life (A Romantic Dramedy, rated PG13, staring Steve Carell and Juliet Binoche.) This is a heartwarming little movie about a big crazy family, life with daughters, getting through grief, and love-love-love. Very Parenthoody, but more modern, sophisticated, and warm. I saw the trailer and it looked pretty boring, but the actual movie was a wonderfully sweet surprise. In my opinion, this one's prolly best for teens and up :)

Kit Kittredge (A Family Film, rated G, staring Abigail Breslin, Julia Ormand, and Chris O'Donnell.) This movie's based on a product (the American Girl dolls), so I thought it would be reallysuperLAME, but, as is sometimes the case...I was wayway wrong! Remember those great old fashioned Hayley Mills Disney movies?... This movie feels like those... it's a kind, wholesome movie about the Depression, told through the eyes of a little girl. It tackles delicate economic issues honestly but gently, and focuses on the importance of perseverance, optimism, friends, and family (a perfect choice for Grandparent visits.)

Father's Day Favorites Playlist

These sweetly-semi-sappy celebratory tunes make for an excellent Father's Day Mix CD (and btw, some of the songs are also great as father/daughter dance selections; I used the first at my wedding reception, and my best friend used the second... )

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

Father/Daughter Dance Sneakiness Tip: At my reception, I wasn't too excited about the idea of having a ton of people staring at me, so after the first half of the song was over, we had the DJ invite all the dads and daughters in attendance to join us. We had lots of grandpas dancing with their grown daughters, and also ittybittylittle kids dancing with new dads... so it made for a really sweet moment (& really sweet photos, too.)

Take Your Dog To Work Day: 6/26/09

Next Friday, June 26, 2009, is Take Your Dog to Work Day! This annual event was first organized ten years ago, and has since gone international. Check to see if your workplace is participating, or might be open to the idea next year. Not only is this a fun way to get to know your colleagues better, but it also provides a great opportunity for dogs to practice polite pet behavior!

If you do plan on taking your dog to work (on this holiday, or on any day, really,) consider following these tips to help ensure a positive experience:

1. Puppy-proof your workspace ahead of time (tape up loose electrical cords, put away tempting markers & office supplies, remove plants & breakables, etc.

2. Be sure to bring treats, bowl, water, a leash, paper towels and an enzyme cleaner to clean up any accidents. Also bring a cozy dog bed, blanket or towel for your pup to lounge on and a few favorite toys to keep her occupied.

3. Most dogs can’t resist the delicious smells that linger around the trashcan. It's a good idea to empty your trash beforehand, and situate the trashcan in another room for the day.

4. Brush up on your obedience commands a few days in advance so you can dazzle everyone with your puppy's skills and polite greeting behavior (remember to discourage jumping up by placing your dog in a sit-stay when new friends approach.)

5. Take your dog for a nice long walk before work to burn off any excess energy, and be sure to take breaks throughout the day for potty & outside play.

6. During the day, keep your dog with you (in your office, cubicle, etc.) Some of your coworkers might only be tolerating a doggy day in an effort to be a team player, and might not appreciate a curious little visitor popping in and out to say hello. When you and your dog leave your individual workspace, be thoughtful and keep your dog on-leash.

7. Remember that even very well-socialized dogs can become stressed in new situations, so be prepared for the possibility that your pup might not enjoy the day as much as you do (have a phone number of a friend on hand in case you need someone to take your dog home early.)

Canine KGB

This clip is from that wonderful DVD I was gushing about a year or so back. The amazing connection between canines and humans is truly unlike any other species dynamic. Dogs are really listening, watching, and trying to figure us out. This excerpt focuses specifically on how dogs have developed uniquely due to their close connection to humans, and in doing so, how dogs seem to understand our human nonverbal cues in ways other species can not. I think you'll find it fascinating:

What a Wonderful World

"Skies of blue, clouds of white?... The bright blessed day? The dark, sacred night?"...

What are your favorite things in nature? What a Wonderful World , by George David Weiss, is a bright, colorful, wonderfully illustrated picture book based on Louis Armstrong's classic song, and it serves as a great nature conversation starter (and it converts well into an easy-to-make felt story, too.) I often use this book as part of an introductory preschool lesson plan, with the goal being to help kids look for and focus on the natural beauty that surrounds them. When noticing nature, children make personal connections with the environment, and they begin to develop a more defined sense of place. While the kids walk the trail, we think about our favorite animals, plants, and places. When we return to class, we write those favorites on heart-shaped pieces of paper, and tape them to a big-huge hanging classroom globe. The kids love coming in each morning to check on their little hearts.

Lots of teachers also use this song/book to introduce sign-language. Instead of doing the whole song in sign (which seems a little much for my 2-5 year-olds...), I pull out key words that are easy for the kids (and me!) to remember, like: Trees, Rainbow, Grow, I-Love-You, Wonderful-World, and Think-To-Myself. If you're superambitious, watch the whole thing in sign here.

Free Scavenger Hunt PreK Photo Printables

Ohmygosh, weelife is sharing some really wonderful free printables, and you will love them. They're scavenger hunt lists. Scavenger hunts are great for keeping little minds focused during walks, vacation travel, car trips, etc. And these ones are PERFECT for pre-reader kidlets because they consist of (colorful, pretty) pictures rather than words. We have some nature scavenger hunt lists at work that use the same visual concept but (no offense coworkers!) the weelife ones use really, truly, lovely photo images. There are five themes: beach, farm, forest, park, and city. LOVELOVELOVE them! Go see, go see, go see...
