Monday Music: Summer Magic in Winter

Lovelovelove Summer Magic. You really can't go wrong with Hayley Mills and Burl Ives. I remember watching this movie as a superlittlekid and wishing I could live in Beulah.

A song for the kids (my preschoolers love dancing to this one):

And one for the kids-at-heart:

Flower Petal Pretty (Solitary Bee Nests)

"Scientists have recently discovered a rare, solitary type of bee that makes tiny little nests by plastering together flower petals. Each nest is a multicolored, textured little cocoon - a papier-mache husk surrounding a single egg, and protecting it while it metamorphoses into an adult."

Cool, huh? Read the whole NPR article here.

Preschool Insect Investigations (Ants!)

This is one of my favorite preschooler observation activities, and Playful Learning has an excellent snippet video explaining the how tos:

...Another fun twist on things is to experiment with different foods. I've done this before, and it's a great way to introduce the sciencey word "hypothesize," or the sciencey phrase "make a prediction." Using a marker, draw lines on a paper plate, dividing the plate visually into four sections. Then, put tiny bits of a different kind of food in each section. Let children hypothesize ( or make a prediction) about which of the four foods they believe the ants will be most attracted to, and then graph their opinions on a chart. What does the majority of the class think? After observing the ants, refer to the chart and see if their findings were correct. Then let the children discuss the possible reasons why or why not.

Yaaay! Burt's Bees Insect Repellant

I just recently tried this, and discovered that it's a zillion times less icky to my sensitive skin than the traditional, smelly chemically versions. Yay for naturalish stuff! Yay for Burt's Bees!
