Preschool Thanksgiving Songs & Fingerplays

*Image via Henny Penny*

I Have a Turkey
(Spoken in a singsongy voice)

"I have a turkey, big and fat."
(Make a fist with one hand, with your thumb out for the turkey’s head.)

"He spreads his tail and walks like that."
(Attach “tail” by spreading out fingers of other hand and join together.)

"His daily corn he would not miss."
(Poke with thumb at floor, while making yummy sounds.)

"And when he talks, it sounds like this: Gobble Gobble Gobble..."

The Turkey Pokey
(Sing to: The Hokey Pokey, with movement actions)

"You put your right wing in
you put your right wing out
You put your right wing in
And you shake it all about.
You do the turkey pokey
And you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about."

Switch in actions with:
"...Left wing"
"...Beak" (head)
"...Tail feathers" (bottom)
"...Turkey body" (whole self)

If You’re Thankful and you Know It
(Sing to: If You’re Happy and You Know It)

"If you’re thankful and you know it, clap your hands.
If you’re thankful and you know it, clap your hands.
If you’re thankful and you know it,
Then your face will surely show it.
If you’re thankful and you know it, clap your hands."

Then switch in with other actions:
"... stomp your feet."
"... shout “I am!”
"... do all three."

Warm, Fuzzy Thanks

This festive Pottery Barn Kids banner is so easy to replicate that I've whipped one up for our Alternative Giving Exhibit at the Nature Center. All you need is rope, scissors and a big, thick stack of sticky felt sheets (I love sticky felt... it saves so much time!) I made my leaf embellishments and letters freehand, but if that makes you nervous, you can always use stencils :) This is a fun, cozy, homespun-feeling decoration that older kids can help create, too. And (best of all) it's supereasy and superfast to make!

Fall-Themed Munchies

Kidlets will love snacking on these creative, easy to make, fall-themed little nummies: Healthy cornucopia wraps...

Peanut butter leaf sammies...

Chocolate kiss acorns...

Picky preschoolers gobble up foods they'd normally turn away from if they look fun & silly (this is also true of foods they help to prepare...) Visit the little nummies site for detailed instructions for these (and more) tasty treats... all of which were especially invented for kids (and kids at heart!)

Cutesy foods can also serve as great science unit tie-ins (discuss fall harvest, study leaves, talk about acorns, squirrels, etc.)

*Reminder for Pet Parents: Please remember that these (and most other) human foods are made for humans only, and should never be shared with our furry friends, most especially dogs.
