Rainbow Colors Matching Song

Tuesday's class started off our brand new 4-week Preschool in Nature session. We talked about how spring brings out so many beautiful colors in nature, and we sang a supersimple song that helped us match up colors (and it also helped us get to know each other!)

(Sung to "If You're Happy and You Know It"):

If you're wearing (red) and know it, clap your hands!

If you're wearing (red) and know it, clap your hands!

If you're wearing (red) and know it...

then your hands will surely show it...

If you're wearing (red) and know it, clap your hands!

Between each color, we stopped to review who was wearing that particular color ("Kaylin's wearing a red shirt... Ian's wearing red shoes!" etc.) This song is always a big favorite with the kidlets: the repetition gives them the time to learn the tune, they get to clap (make physical sounds/move), and they learn each other's names and faces in an easygoing, unstructured way (YAY!)

Eyes on the Iris

Did you know that many of our favorite springtime plants are poisonous? Irises are, and so are lilies... Not only are they toxic to humans, but to dogs and (especiallyespecially) cats. This year, be sure to keep your Easter blossoms away from curious mouths, fingers (and paws!)

Simple Solutions: Dog-Proofing Trash Cans

Dogs have an extremely sensitive sense of smell, which can make the kitchen trash an enticing object of interest. Because eating human foods (especially those old, germy human foods that lurk in the trash) can be unhealthy for a dog, it's important that you make sure you put an end to your puppy's "dumpster diving." Sooo many pet parents have this plundering problem, but, in most cases, the civilizing solution is actually really, really simple:

1) Purchase a trash can that has a secure lid.

2) Before you put your liners in, place two old 10lb weights at the bottom of your trash can (so, unless he's been working out), your dog will no longer be able to knock the trash over)

Butterfly Colors Cooperation Collage

One of our classroom topics last week was butterflies. Did you know that butterfly wings are covered with tiny, delicate scales? Here's a fun preschool learning project we made together that not only emphasizes this fascinating science fact, but also integrates cooperation, sensory stimulation, color recognition, and counting (and also it's just reeeally puuurty!)

Here's what you need:
Colorful construction paper scraps
One large piece of construction paper/poster board
Marker
Glue sticks
Scissors

Here's What You Do:

Before Class:
1. Draw a large butterfly shape with your marker.
2. Cut your paper scraps into scale shapes (sort of like half circles, filled "U"s, etc.)

During Class:
3. Roll your butterfly out onto the floor/table and invite children to put scales on the butterfly.
4. Have glue sticks available.
5. Let each child ask for a color, and distribute per requests until your wings are covered.
6. Count the color scales (ex: "How many red scales are there?")
7. Hang on wall or window.
8. Admire.

Humane Education: Three Super Simple Ways to Encourage A Young Child's Compassion and Empathy for Animals

1. Never refer to an animal as "it." Always use "she" or "he."

2. Read stories that have animals as main characters.

Ask children "How is (name of character) feeling when (event/circumstance) happened?"

Encourage children to connect the animals' feelings to the events that occur, examining the relationships between events and feelings.

With olderish children (Kinders, etc.) ask them, "How would you feel if this happened to you?"

3. Educate children about animal communication.

Help children understand that all animals communicate even though we may not "speak their language."

Learn to say hello in spanish ("hola") or by using a simple hand sign (wave.) Extend this metaphor to the animal world. Encourage your children to become observers: how does your puppy say hello? How does she say "leave me alone..."

"Children trained to extend justice, kindness and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relation with each other. Character training along these lines in youth will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding - in every respect more valuable citizens." (1993 US National Parent-Teacher Association Congress)
