Valentine's Day Preschool Toddler Literature Art Activity: "The Day it Rained Hearts" Tissue Water Resist Cards

This is a really fun, super-easy art and literature activity that's great for Valentine's Day. We made these cards in one of our parent-and-me classes this year, and it was a huge hit with both the itty bitty toddlers and the older preschoolers, too.  Even more importantly, this activity created the opportunity to discuss things like rain, weather, shapes, sizes, and colors, all while exercising those small motor skills.  Felicia Bond's book is the perfect tie-in to read before or after.

Have the children use a spray bottle to wet their cards, and then place precut tissue paper shapes on top (be sure to have lots of hearts)...

...Spray some more so the tissue sticks and the colors start to bleed and blend...

...Let the children choose their colors and shapes and every piece will look different...

...Once the paper is dry, help the children remove the tissue remains, revealing the print created by the water resist.

this technique would be gorgeous on scarf weight silk. i think that while the tissue wouldn't stick, the same bleeding effect would happen and be a fairly color-fast dye.
