@Whimsy: Besides being superpretty, Portuguese Water Dogs were actually bred to HERD FISH. Like, swim around, herding schools of fish for fishermen. How fun/amazing/weird is THAT?
@juju: Yes, they are smart, big and sturdy, and can be good with young children, as long as they are both trained, meaning both the dog and child ;)
To be honest, not always, but really a lot of the time when it appears a dog isn't good with kids, it's often just because the kids in question haven't ever been taught how to respectfully interact with other species. It's all about creating a set of boundaries for the dog to follow, and a set for the kids to follow, too.
Portuguese Water Dogs have a lot of energy, so they just need extra walks and training (because they were bred to work, learning new things and taking direction helps focus that energy and makes for a more happy dog.) Much like other herding breeds, they are prone to the spontaneous herding of other family pets, even the family children, etc.
Your thesis? Tell me more. Why are they awesome?
