Muppet Christmas Special

Preschoolers love a crazy Muppet TV special (and so do some grownups, ahem...) So be sure to set your TIVOs for Letters to Santa, airing December 17, 2009, at 8pm, on NBC.

And while we're talking about Muppets... the Muppets made one of the best Christmas albums of all time called A Christmas Together (pop in to my best friend's blog for a quick, lovely listen to two superfavorite tracks.) My veryvery absolute favorite rendition of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is on that album, too, sung beautifully by Rowlf, who happens to be a handsome dog Muppet (seen below.) Christmas just isn't Christmas without the Muppets :)

Green Gifts Workshops

Scared of the malls during the holiday season? Instead of subjecting yourself to claustrophobia (and spending lots of money on stuff like creepy fruitcakes and musical neckties), consider making a few gifts this year. Stop by the El Dorado Nature Center's Alternative Giving Exhibit for lots of easy-to-make ideas.

The wonderful Herbalist Jule James is teaching an HERBAL GIFTS FOR THE HOLIDAYS class, too. In this workshop, students will make and take home a wide range of herbal baths, teas, creams and soaps. December 7, 2008, noon-2 pm. Please call 570-3111 for rates, information and registration. Her workshops are fun, informative, and ideal for noncrafty types, too!

Baroo?

Trainers note: this is a friendly expression that threatening dogs rarely make. If you encounter a shy puppy, copying this sweetly curious gesture will often help put her at ease.

Muppet Mania

I love me a muppet! The creative geniuses at FAO Schwarz recently debuted their new Muppet Whatnot Workshop. Preschoolers will love love LOVE this. You design your very own real, personalized muppet (you can make a "mini-me" type muppet based on your appearance, or whip up the ideal muppet of your dreams using your imagination.) By choosing from various muppety skin colors, eyes, noses, hair, etc., each muppet comes out looking unique and one-of-a-kindish. There are even funny, outlandish outfits (newscaster blazers, baseball uniforms, and the like.) It's sort of like the build-a-bear concept... but way, way more awesome! Up until just today you could actually make and order your muppet by using a supercool virtual muppet maker... but due to the crazy-bananas-cuckoo interest, online custom muppet orders are no longer being taken :( I guess when it comes to muppets, you snooze, you loose. The good news: You can still order a gift kit (and your muppet will be assembled in February 2009.) Order yours before it's too late! Darling. Silly. Wonderful.

Warm, Fuzzy Thanks

This festive Pottery Barn Kids banner is so easy to replicate that I've whipped one up for our Alternative Giving Exhibit at the Nature Center. All you need is rope, scissors and a big, thick stack of sticky felt sheets (I love sticky felt... it saves so much time!) I made my leaf embellishments and letters freehand, but if that makes you nervous, you can always use stencils :) This is a fun, cozy, homespun-feeling decoration that older kids can help create, too. And (best of all) it's supereasy and superfast to make!

Fall-Themed Munchies

Kidlets will love snacking on these creative, easy to make, fall-themed little nummies: Healthy cornucopia wraps...

Peanut butter leaf sammies...

Chocolate kiss acorns...

Picky preschoolers gobble up foods they'd normally turn away from if they look fun & silly (this is also true of foods they help to prepare...) Visit the little nummies site for detailed instructions for these (and more) tasty treats... all of which were especially invented for kids (and kids at heart!)

Cutesy foods can also serve as great science unit tie-ins (discuss fall harvest, study leaves, talk about acorns, squirrels, etc.)

*Reminder for Pet Parents: Please remember that these (and most other) human foods are made for humans only, and should never be shared with our furry friends, most especially dogs.

Rescue Rescues

I just got an email from my best friend saying that The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble! They aren't getting enough people to visit the site... and each time someone visits the site, free food is donated to abused and neglected animals.

This is a great opportunity for animal lovers to make a difference, it's supereasy, and it only takes about 3 seconds: Just go to the site and click on the purple box that says "Click here to give - it's free."

This doesn't cost you a thing. Corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food in exchange for advertising. Great idea, huh? But it only works if people visit the site :)

Here's the web site! Please pass it along to people you know:

Sticks and Stones

Playing with sticks and stones might not break your dog's bones... but it CAN really hurt them.

As a professional dog trainer, I've been lucky enough to work for, with, & befriend some really wonderful people in veterinary medicine. While dogs are pretty notorious for getting into mischief, the stories I hear most from vets are ER injuries caused during well-meaning games of fetch.

Fetch can be a superfun activity that helps pups and humans bond (and it's also great for burning off excess puppy energy!) but please nevereverEVER use sticks... In fact, according to many vets (including my previous Pet First Aid instructor), stick-related injuries are THE NUMBER ONE ER injury at many vet hospitals. There are numerous causes for worry. Dogs sometimes swallow large chunks that get stuck in the esophagus or intestines, can get splinters inside their mouths, and (most sadly, and most frequently) there are countless stories of dogs who impale themselves while catching, running, or chewing. It might sound like stick impalement would be a fluke accident... but it happens much more often than people outside the industry realize. And it's not something anyone wants to witness.

Rock injuries are another story I hear about a lot (from both my vet friends, and my dog training clients.) Some dogs (lots of larger breeds) seem drawn to playing with rocks and stones (especially river rocks & lava rocks.) Some dogs like to carry rocks here & there, toss them about in the air... some even like to chomp on them (or eat them!) While this might seem like simply odd, harmless fun, when it comes to rocks & stones... it's actually quite dangerous. Besides causing serious and painful dental injuries like broken teeth (and believe me, you DO NOT want to find out first hand just how much it costs to get dog dental work done...), rocks & stones can also be swallowed (sometimes accidentally), leading to choking and intestinal blockage.

When working with dogs who've taken a liking to sticks and stones, I've found these tips most helpful:

1) Simple Solution: Remove all loose rock/stone from your landscaping.

2) Required Action: Be a responsible pet parent by providing close supervision when in rocky/ branchy areas.

3) Easy, Fun Training Technique: Trade up. Have a delicious treat, or irresistible toy on hand when venturing into known rocky/branchy areas. If your dog picks something up, you can make an exchange. Present the treat or toy at nose level, kindly say "drop it," and when your dog drops the rock/stick, say "take it," make the switch, and praise.

This is called incompatible behavior... your dog can't open her mouth to take a treat or toy if her mouth is closed around something else. Incompatible behavior techniques work for almost anything (for instance, if your dog is in a sit-stay, he can't jump up on guests... it's all about giving your dog an alternative task that he can succeed at!)

4) Preventative Training: The "leave it" command. Teach your dog this command, and when on walks, put it into action with said rocks, sticks (and other yucky things like poop, gutter junk, etc.) Most basic and puppy group classes will cover this command, and while it can be tricky for inquisitive puppies to master, once they've got it down it really comes in handy!

5) Provide Sensory Stimulation: Be sure your dog has a good supply of supersturdy chew toys. Look for toys that best resemble the shapes and textures that your dog seems drawn to.

If your dog mostly has issues while on walks, an easy (and fun!) solution is to vary your walking route... new smells, sounds, and sights get your dog motivated to keep exploring what could be around the corner rather than fixate on those same, old, irresistibly naughty familiar locations.

Things that usually don't work with rock and stick issues:
Drama: yelling, chasing, forcing items out of the mouth. Sometimes dogs will think this feels like a game (grumpy mom tag! woohoo!)
Bitter Apple (and friends): while icky-tasting sprays might work on household items, who has the time or money to spray all the rocks in the entire yard (or neighborhood!)

When it comes to sticks and stones, "just say no"... or, more exactly... "just say leave it!" :)

Polite Smiles Primate Style

Remember the Christmas your grammy gave you that "unique" zebra sweatshirt with the puffy paint and rhinestone embellishments?... We humans exchange contrived smiles quite often in order to be sociable. But humans aren't the only ones who share fake (um, I mean "polite") smiles. I recently stumbled across this excellent blog: Field Notes from an Evolutionary Psychologist, and there's a wonderful posting about chimp smiles. The picture above shows a genuine chimp smile (adorable!), while the photo below displays a fake smile (very jazzhandsy!) If you love chimps, visit her site for loads more interesting, thoughtful, (and really cute!) primate stuff.

Calling All Squirrels, Cooks, and Nature Nerds!

Next Saturday, November 8, 2008 is the Nature Center's Acorn Festival. Did you know that acorns were a vital form of sustenance for Southern CA's native people? The ample CA Coastal Oaks provide so much more than beauty and shade! My friends Anne and Deborah have been hard at work coming up with superfun activities, and have even enlisted a guest chef to teach a special "Cooking With Acorns Class." If you're interested, you may enroll at the Nature Center Museum front counter. Preregistration is required.

Animal Planet, Anyone?

Pam from Buddha Dog Massage has been asked to find some people that might be interested in filming an animal massage class with her for an Animal Planet show segment. If you have a polite, well-socialized, trained, calmish dog, this might be a reallyREALLY fun opportunity (and if you and your dog don't fit the bill, you might want to check out Pam's website anyway... she is wonderfully friendly, and offers a variety of well-priced animal services.)

Filming is being planned for either Monday, December 1st or Tuesday, December 9th, at Runyon Canyon off-leash dog park at 2000 N. Fuller Ave. in L.A./Hollywood 90046.

She will be speaking with a producer as early as Monday (11/2/08) to give him an idea on how many people might be interested and willing to participate. If you have an interest, please email her at pam@buddhadog.com asap.
